I've been growing Coastal Redwoods and Giant Sequoias in a variety of containers (different fabric aeration pots, plastic pots, grow tubes, ceramic pots) and Squareroot Aeration Containers have given me the most incredible results.
I purchased many 1 yr. Redwood seedlings (approx. 8" each) in April and did an experiment. Three went into 1 and 2 gallon Squareroote Aeration containers, three stayed in their tubes (as in common, until the 2nd year), and three went into plastic pots. All we placed next to each other, watered equally and given the same liquid fertilizers. Here are the results, 6 months later:
Leech Tube: Redwoods grew about 3"-4"
Plastic pots: Redwoods grew about 6"-9"
Sqaureroot Aeration containers: Redwoods grew 4-5 FEET !!!
The difference is unbelievable. Results are similar with larger seedlings and larger containers.
I went to a nursery to give them one of the trees as a gift for their display garden and to show them the difference between the Squareroot Aeration container and the seedling growth in the Leech Tube. Since I had already given them leech tube seedlings in the Spring, they knew what to expect with the tubes. When I brought in the tree in the Aeration container, they gasped, whistled, and made a bunch of other noises.
I didn't know what to expect when I peeled back the aeration container, but NO SOIL fell from the bag. Everyone was in shock as they saw a nearly 1-gallon healthy rootball, without the circling that is common with plastic pots.
The containers may be a little pricey, but they are SOOOOO worth it. I hope to grow vegetables in my garden in the same fashion next year.
